I would like to just keep exploring this program and learning the commands in order to become more efficient. In fact, this is really what I desire to do for all three of these programs. I have the most experience in photoshop but it is still scarce. I know it’s about dedicating time and patients into it and that is exactly what I tend on doing. I want to know when its best to use what program and why; I know the very basics of each so I think that when I have learned more about each program then the differences will be easily seen. </span></div><div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; margin: 0.1pt 0in; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; margin: 0.1pt 0in; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">I have always said I wanted to have a good grasp on the digital realm in design and I know what needs to be done for me to attain this. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">for our final presentation, we will be presenting the design process and conclusion using the presentation we have put on the wall in the downstairs lobby of the gatewood studio building. moving from the upstairs studio space to the downstairs lobby gives us much more room to present out designs and gives it the opportunity to be seen by all the people walking in the building. we will hopefully be presenting this display to the IOB management, board members, and some employees. </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">we will also be presenting our design process in a book form so we can give it to the industries of the blind and have our process described in more detail. a rough outline on the book so far...</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">When beginning the project we focused on the study of braille as a way to relate the nature of the company into our design. We made sketch models of textures in different scales from the idea of braille. <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Color:</span></b></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">When considering color schemes within our design we focused on using warm colors to help tie in the idea of harmony, protection, unity, and community that represents the essence of the IOB Company.</span></div>

<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Chaos Tree:</span></b></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">From angular shapes and forms we idealized an outside graphic installation that would help to draw people into the IOB. This form would also become a symbol for the IOB and part of the interior design. We experimented with a hexagon and the individual parts in which it can be assembled. From there we discovered a tessellated design that brought in unity along with order. It also played well with the use of positive and negative space allowing for a play on eyes.</span></div>

<br />
<b><i>how will natural and artificial lighting improve your space?</i></b><br />
there is a lack of windows throughout the space so artificial lighting is the main source of light. with artificial lighting we have more control of the lighting through out the space; however, in my opinion, nothing beats that good ol' sunshine.<br />
<br />
<b><i>will you use focal lighting to direct people?</i></b><br />
i think it is necessary for us to use key elements of the design, texture and/or lighting , as way-finding idea for people who are both blind and those who are not. not to mention our tessellating shapes that will have multiple affects with the lighting and shadows when hit with a direct light source.<br />
<br />
<b><i>how will you create moments of interest within your space using light?</i></b><br />
we were were looking at our tessellating shape we realized it would be a good idea to incorporate a light source with in the shapes that make up the pattern. we will have to be displaying some of the products that the IOB sells for visitors and people of interest, we were thinking of a frame/outline around the products in order to make people want to look there.caitlyn whisenanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10277970167941400139noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3988138827351003309.post-20146294569296191042011-10-16T09:41:00.000-07:002013-02-27T20:31:40.224-08:00balancing white walls and pine<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
texture has been one of the main elements the IOB group has been focusing on. there are hundreds of other things to constantly be taking into consideration but i feel as if it all comes back to texture and pattern. with that always in mind, the other elements of design begin to come into play, as well as the principles of design. we have been working with using texture to create an initial circulation/path/line that would be taken through the space. we decided to use more of a warm color scheme because we believe it will help the most with emphasizing the textures and would be more appropriate for creating a more welcoming space. a challenge we have been dealing with is maintaining unity through the lobby space all the way through to the factory and cafeteria areas. one of the forms we have been incorporating into the design is the hexagon and the shapes within. we are also trying out many different scales of the texture and patterns.caitlyn whisenanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10277970167941400139noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3988138827351003309.post-44343425602657894662011-09-30T10:23:00.000-07:002013-02-27T20:33:02.332-08:00assignment 003<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: black;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">After our lovely Washington
dc trip, followed the not-so-lovely speech assignment. Well at least in my
experience. I thought it was extremely helpful to make such a formal presentation
because I was able to see where I really needed to work on this semester:
public speaking; I also enjoyed hearing what everyone else had to say about the
museum and how they approached the challenge of the speech. I began planning my
speech out I made many lists of key points I thought were important enough to
talk about when comparing and contrasting the museums. I also made a list for
each museum individually, on how the materials and structures used help represent
the buildings and what they contained. Narrowing it down to one I thought
worked really well, I wrote the speech down in more detail.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> I
thought the presentations given by the speaking center were a little helpful,
especially the second one when they gave us a packet of information. It helped
me remember the structure of a formal presentation; I thought this important
because it can be applied to the presentations we have to give in class for our
final projects. I do not think I would go to the speaking center for help but I
did appreciate what they did.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> For
my next presentation, I want to plan a little better; I have never been one of
those people who can just “wing” a speech at any given time. I will also
practice a lot more so I can be more familiar with the flow of the words and
not get choked up or nervous when presenting. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<br />
recently i have been doing endless amounts of research on textures, patterns, and what not for the project im working with at the industries of the blind. i came across this beautiful building and thought it was just fantastic. <a href="http://www.hazelwood.glasgow.sch.uk/">hazelwood school</a> was designed by <a href="http://www.murraydunloparchitects.com/">GM+AD Architects</a> for students 2-19 who are sensory impaired. a lot of thought has to go into everything, including all the senses. the curves of the building flow with the natural curves of the landscape and the existing nature. very inspirational and very relevant to the project i am working on in class, i thought it notable.<br />

post-it notes are one of my most favorite inventions. i use them to jot down a thought, write notes, make lists, etc. i think that they are so perfect for an organizer like myself. however, i thought i was obsessed until now...<br />

recently i have been doing a lot of research on the art of braille. it is a system used by blind/visually impaired people to read and write. we are trying to find ways to incorporate the idea of braille into our design at the industries of the blind. with hours of research, comes many bookmarked pages.. and i would love to share some of the interesting inspirations i have seen...<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">im not going to lie... i love photoshop but i dont think i have ever need closer to throwing my computer across the room. actually this was one of the things i was extremely excited about learning and i knew it wasnt going to be easy. to achieve the final image above i started with the picture i took in washinton dc of the national museum of natural history and grabbed an image of a pretty/interesting sky. using the quick selection tool i outlined the blue sky > shifted layers > and did a cut so that the mystical sky would take the clouds place. after that i outlined the museum and added a filter called 'glowing edge' to the museum itself. im still in the beginning learning phase of this unknown photoshop, but im eager to become a master. </span></td></tr>

We crossed town and after a ride through UNCG campus, we headed home, via Lee Street. As we were passing by the mysterious building to my left, I asked Kyle, “hey, what happens in that building?” He has lived in Greensboro for the past seven years and he had no idea what happen at the industries of the blind. Now I have had the pleasure of viewing and learning about this building myself. When I first re-approached the building, and the previous memory quickly passed through my head, I felt the mysterious feeling pulse from the building yet again. I walked in and nothing was too memorable until the interesting plant scene going on underneath the stairwell. Fake plastic plants. As a class, we made our way to the conference room where we were going to meet Mr. Lopresti. He was very energetic about the employees who worked there and he wanted to get their story out. He seemed very excited to have us, I was very intrigued and couldn’t wait to see the rest of the building and meet some of the employees. He led us down to the factor area and we were able to observe some of the workers hard at work. I enjoyed how enthused they were about their jobs. I was so glad I was able to view this place and meet some of the employees within. And yes, I was sure to inform my brother of what happen in that building!<br />

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">When I went back to the museum to examine the exhibits, I
was not sure what exactly to expect. The only exhibit I was familiar with was
the traveling exhibit that is located in the lobby to the left of the main
entrance. The small, open display is bordered with large panels; I immediately
went around to view the quotes and information that they held. The first one
explained that what was in front of me was pertaining specifically to the
Jewish life here in Greensboro, North Carolina. I could hear the out of date
monitor ever sense I walked through the front door, however, now it became my
point of interest. I loved the visual connection with the people and being able
to hear there voices helped me make an even stronger connection with the
people. The video had individuals telling their history in Greensboro, family
history, and etc. As I listened to the video, I was also looking at the objects
around me and began to feel a sense of pride from the Jewish community in
Greensboro. I saw and heard words that were being repeated through the small
space- <b>family</b> comes first, holding
onto <b>tradition</b>, keeping the <b>faith</b>, love of <b>learning</b>, <b>united</b>. There
was a timeline that was spread across the back wall of the exhibit and I noticed
it was the darkest colored object in the space, stepping backward made me see
the same grey shade at the bottom of the banners. The use of fading grays made
my eyes travel up and down the exhibit which I thought was very beneficial because
it made me look at the entire exhibit from top to bottom, while my eyes
naturally traveled from left to right, absorbing as much information as
possible.</span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">[Historic Room Interiors & The Art of Turning Clay]</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I then traveled up the spiral staircase to the second floor
and made my way into the period rooms and pottery display. I was a bit confused
when I saw the semi brightly lit pottery in the center of the area, with a very
modern blue banner, stamped with orange and white lettering. I completely missed
the furniture displays that surrounded the pottery, and I walked to the center
of the room where I briefly looked at the large amount of pottery. If it had
not been for the odd placement of the television in the center of the room
column, I would have never noticed the darkly lit furniture displays that were
tucked behind the walls of the pottery. I slowly made my way to them, thinking
they might have been storage for the museum, or just old exhibits that were in
the process of being switched out. Startled by other museum visitors who were
examining the room displays, I quickly realized there were multiple displays of
historic room interiors. Again examining them briefly I found myself in the
center with the pottery and made my way to the opposite door to exit that
exhibit. There was nothing in the room that made me want to linger there and
learn about <i>The Art of Turning Clay</i></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
or historic rooms. This was a feeling I would quickly realize would follow me
through the remainder of most of the museum. </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> Bird noises? I cannot
remember the last time I slowly approached so many doorways in one area.
Ominous lighting must have been the museums major theme through out the entire
exhibit. I was so thrown off by the bird noises that I went back tot the
exhibits entrance to make sure I was in the right place. Pushing my self past
the dark, slender hallway that was covered in quotes it opened into a… timeline
of pictures. Florescent lighting. I never stayed around long enough to look at
all the pictures or figure out why some were illuminated by a florescent glow.
This exhibit did become my favorite exhibit out of all of them, once I wove
myself out of the beginning labyrinth and the ceiling opened up. I took more
time through the rest of the exhibit. There were interactive displays,
artifacts in display cases, pictures of relevant people, and more. I really
enjoyed the replica display of the diner sit-it that took place during the time
of segregation. There was an enlarged photo of the four students who started the
initial sit-in and the song<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><i>A Change Is Gonna Come</i>, by Sam Cooke
played from above. I thought the displays were very well done and visually
appealing to look at; some of the lighting was a bit to dim in areas, almost
daunting. At the end of the exhibit, I was lead straight into the gift shop. I did
not have much interest in the merchandise, and I thought there might be a more
ideal way to make people want to purchase a memorabilia rather then being force
to exit through the gift shop.</span><br />

gone to the main spiraling staircase that had begun in the lobby. I walked into
this room display and was completely confused to what exactly I was
viewing/what it all was. After a minute or so, I realized that the main lobby
stairs had led me into the middle of the exhibit; once I got to the fake tree
in the middle of the “movie set” I became aware that it was displays of what
the town would be like in those times. In a circular arrangement around the big
fake tree there was “Miss Lina Porters Schoolhouse,” “Hotel Clegg” (where I had
originally came from), “Crystal Theatre,” and “Richardson & Fariss
Druggists.” Again, it was all very dim and had lots of dark areas; the painted
people that were around the exhibit very not smiling, none of them, everyone
had very serious faces on and it was very unbecoming. The motion censor
audiotapes were the worst part of it all; I was the only person in the exhibit
and I was startled many times. It made be very uncomfortable and I quickly left
back through the <i>Hotel Clegg</i>. </span></span>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I think the museum is overall awkward; I was not egger to
view much of the exhibits and I did not want to slow down at many displays.
When I walked out of the museum, I did not feel happy about what I just saw. It
may have been because I was observing it by myself and there were not many
other visitors at that time, but I feel like that should not be a factor to the
bizarre feelings from the exhibits. </span></span><br />

My first encounter with the industries of the blind was a

on a bike ride around town, when I saw the building and was quickly intrigued.
I ask him what in the world they did there, and even with his seven-year
history in Greensboro, he had no idea. I thought the building was eerie and
intimidating, but I was still curious. I was reminded of my curiosity when I
was told it was a place I would be exploring in my studio class. Unfortunately,
I was unable to attend the class visit, but that just made me want to learn
about it even more. </div>

I would not only enjoy learning more about the industries of
the blind, but I would be honored to be able to work with the people who are
involved and getting their message out to the community. I believe I could contribute most to this project because of my prolonged
interest of the space and eagerness to learn about it. I have talked with many
classmates about their visit to the space, and looked through many pictures, on
top of personal internet research. I take pride in my efficiency and
organizational skills. I work well with people who are as excited about
something as I am and willing to work with each other to explore design
opportunities. I enjoy developing a schedule or plan so multiple tasks stay in
order, especially when it comes to group work. Working with a group of other
individuals on one project can be stressful at time; I try to make it a good
experience for my team and myself. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
I remember when I first moved to Greensboro a little over a
year now and my brother Kyle and I when on a bike ride around town. We crossed
town and after a ride through UNCG campus, we headed home, via Lee Street. As
we were passing by the mysterious building to my left, I asked Kyle, “hey, what
happens in that building?” He has lived in Greensboro for the past seven years
and he had no idea what happen at the industries of the blind. Now I have had
the pleasure of viewing and learning about this building myself. When I first
re-approached the building, and the previous memory quickly passed through my
head, I felt the mysterious feeling pulse from the building yet again. I walked
in and nothing was too memorable until the interesting plant scene going on
underneath the stairwell. Fake plastic plants. As a class, we made our way to
the conference room where we were going to meet Mr. Lopresti. He was very
energetic about the employees who worked there and he wanted to get their story
out. He seemed very excited to have us, I was very intrigued and could not wait
to see the rest of the building and meet some of the employees. He led us down
to the factor area and we were able to observe some of the workers hard at
work. I enjoyed how enthused they were about their jobs. I was so glad I was
able to view this place and meet some of the employees within.</div>

after i put some coins in the meters, i walked along the side of the museum following the path of the sidewalk. there was a sign on the corner of the street with an arrow that pointed to the direction in which the museum was from that point, i followed it left. when approaching the main entrance the first thing that caught my eye was the massive banners that hung on either side of the doors, i then proceeded to notice the large arch that framed the door. i walked in the building and my eyes bounced from place to place immediately. i walked towards the small desk slightly to my right, turned to the stairs on my rights but quickly turned around and whet the other way. the bright banners lead me along the curved wall to the opposite side of the lobby. i weaved through the main lobby quickly and found myself back to the desk area faster then i had expected. i quickly realized that the museum had no sense of direction once i entered from outside. there was no hierarchy, balance, or emphasis on the main features/areas in the space. i initially felt lead to the stairs but quickly realized the entire other side of the lobby; the curved walls took me in one direction, when the bright colored banners lead me in the opposite direction when i began reading them. once i stopped and really look around at the structure i was standing in, i began to see details that really stood out. for instance, the curving walls that wrapped around the entire space like a ribbon and ran into the twisting staircase that directed my eyes to the massive windows that let light pour through them onto the... interesting colored wallpaper. i felt as if the walls had a sense of movement and flow that could potentially used as a way to direct people through the space, or at least an idea of the path that should be taken.<br />
